Human + Machine: Racing with a AI teammate

photo.jpg
Roborace

Publicado el 9 oct. 2018
There’s nothing unusual about having two drivers on a race team…unless one of those drivers was a robot. At this year’s Berlin round of Formula E, Roborace invited Acronym designer Errolson Hugh and YouTuber Nick Andrew, aka AR12Gaming, to join forces with teams from the Technical University of Munich and the University of Pisa, respectively. The Human + Machine teams raced on the grounds of the Berlin Tempelhof Airport as a proof of concept of our first race season, Season Alpha, debuting in 2019.

The competition format was a time attack challenge. The quickest lap from the human and machine driver was recorded and the two times were averaged to determine the team’s final result. The team with the faster average time was declared the winner.

Teams from the Technical University of Munich and the University of Pisa arrived in Berlin earlier this year ready to do battle. Held during the German round of the 2018 Formula E championship, Roborace’s Human + Machine challenge saw the two university teams compete for the fastest lap time around the custom circuit in identical autonomous DevBot race cars. The teams were paired to human drivers consisting of Nick Andrew, aka AR12Gaming, and Errolson Hugh, designer and co-founder of the technical apparel brand, Acronym. The former was paired to the University of Pisa and the latter with the Technical University of Munich.

Thousands of driving hours need to go into the development of an automated driving system technology – the artificial intelligence behind these systems needs to be tested, iterated, and tested again. How do we achieve these sorts of workloads using race cars that can’t be driven on the street?

roborace-devbot-2-2019-2_750x.jpg

Hemos cambiado nuestro pensamiento.

2 dic. 2018
Rising from the industrial surrounds of Brooklyn’s historic Navy Shipyard, Hypefest was the first event of its kind for long-time culture kings, Hypebeast. An eclectic mix of fashion, music, technology and art came together on the banks of the East River for a single weekend, and Roborace sat pride of place in the center of it all with the Robocar Remix project.

In collaboration with designer Errolson Hugh from Acronym, Roborace unveiled a digital vision of where artificially-intelligent motorsport could be in ten years’ time, complete with power-ups, traffic, and drones. Attendees were transported to this world via Robocar VR, our custom, fully immersive experience with motion control by D-Box that simulates racing at speed.

As a part of the project, Acronym designed the custom livery on Robocar and a matching capsule collection, featuring hoodies, T-shirts, and headwear.

10 dic. 2018
Calculated performance is one thing, testing the physical limitations of new technology in the real world is another. Recently, the Roborace team decided to find out just how fast its autonomous race car could go in a straight line. Robocar has the power, the aerodynamics, and it certainly looks fast, but how does that translate on a test track when there’s nothing but raw computing power keeping it all together at the very limits of performance?

Let’s find out.
