*** DISCLAIMER: Yes, we do know that the video has Audio issues. Abnormal weather before the race provoked damages on the Audio equipment that lead to the final result heard here. In the end we are still using the footage as its interest surpasses the technical shortcoming. ***

One of the most unique HillClimb events in the World, the Knysna Speed Festival this year was specially unique as it featured not only a new Modified Saloon All Time Recordist, but also the entire field was more powerful than ever. From the 1600Hp Nissan R35 of Franco Scribante with it´s outrageous Aero, to the Skylines of the Van Zummeren family taking the R34 platfrom to the 1000Hp mark or the 700+Hp mid engined Monsters of Pieter Zeelie and Dawie Joubert, there was something for everyone and it made for one of the most interesting Top 10 lists of the year.

Watch this one closely and let us know who was your favourite...

The greatest dominator of the E1-2000cc Class in Italy this year is this spectacular Renault Clio driven by Giuseppe D´Angelo, and for those paying attention, this is a machine we have presented in the past, although in different colours.

This is the SAMO Competition Renault Clio that was built and driven by Luigi Sambuco until last year. With around 300Hp/9.000Rpm from it´s 2.0L Naturally Aspirated F4R Engine, this Front Wheel Drive Monster has benefitted from an intensive "diet" with most of its chassis spaceframed by now, making for a total weight little above 800Kg. Add to that all the Aerodynamic work done, and you end up with one of the fastest 2000cc Class machines in all of Europe.

Now on 2019, it is also wearing quite the striking livery, with Mr. D´Angelo really embracing the more monstruous side of this machine and dubbing it the "Black Mamba", with a Viper logo right in the middle of the bonnet... Just so the competition knows what to expect...

Two cars connected to Rallying but with very different origins. Here we have Andrew Hawkeswood in the Mazda 2 AP4+, built for the New Zealand National Rally Championship under the special AP4 regulations, although using here a 2.2L Turbocharged engine with over 500Hp and moving around 1100Kg. Against it we have Carl Ruiterman´s Subaru WRX STi, a car that was originall intended to become a RWD Drift Car but after some testing with it´s reworked 700Hp 2.1L stroked EJ20 Boxer unit, ended up becoming a Sprint/HillClimb machine.

Both placed on the overall Top 10 at this year´s edition of the Leadfoot Festival (with the MAzda being marginally faster), but definitely both quite spectacular machines showing how unique the New Zealand Racing scene in their different motorsport fields.

Gifted with one of the most spectacular roads in all of HillClimb Racing, Lucine in Slovenia was the stage to one more event filled with some proper Monsters. A great number of accidents and mechanical problems caused by the heat mixed the final classification a lot and this is reflected by this unusual Top 10 List.

Although the fastest Touring Car machine was a very common suspect, here we could see some of the 600+Hp All Wheel Drive beasts really struggling to keep up with the loghter cars. Watch until the end to discover...

Onboard Crazy Simca Rallye 3 || Rear-Engined 675Kg Monster

This little Monster is called Simca Rallye 3 and is quite the rare (but very popular) 70´s French Sports Car that has been converted into proper Racing Cars through the years both for Rallying and HillClimb Racing. This one is now powered by a 1300cc Engine unit capable of around 160Hp, moving only 675Kg and driven by Romain Richardeau, who might be the current best driver of these quirky things.

At Osnabruck Bergrennen 2019 it certainly was possibly to see that as he posted a 1:05.889, positioning him above many Lancer Evo, BMW and many other much more powerful machines. And other than that, there´s the tremendous driving style. And for that just watch the Onboard footage. You will get a proper idea on how quick someone can be with something with little over 150Hp and a manual H-Pattern 5-speed Gearbox...

It has a bit for everyone and featured also a proper fight for the Top Spot, featuring exactly the current fastest Swiss Monsters, which are fighting for the National Title and probably also for the "Fastest Hillclimb Racing Lancer Evolution in Europe" crown...

This is a good one. Let us know which was your favourite Monster below... Oh, and if you are wondering who took that beautiful Thumbnail Photo, wonder no more, this is the talented photographer behind it:

870Hp Mini Quattro Monster || 1014Nm Inline 5 Turbo Swap

Originally built by Brede Alnes for the Norwegian Gatebil Series (at the time with a 4 Cylinder 1.8L Turbo Engine), this is now Chris Slade´s Monster, powered now by a 870Hp/1014Nm 2.5L Straight 5 Turbocharged Engine and we were finally able to see it trying Hillclimbing in the last few years at St. Goueno in France ( clips show are from 2017, 2018 and 2019).

As one can imagine everything on this car is custom made asd little of it is actually a Mini to begin with. Body is built by Z-Cars, entirely from fiberglass, using Lexan windows and of course the whole Chassis is tubeframed. The custom independent suspension was built by Mobek Racing using Bilstein shocks. The brakes are AP Racing four-piston with 310 mm discs up front and Audi S3 with EBC Turbogroove discs in back. One of the other modifications performed by MR. Slade since aquiring the car was fitting a 6-Speed Sequential Gearbox.

Engine used is a 2.5 L Audi 20v 07K inline-five upgraded with JD pistons, H-rods, forged crankshaft and a Dry-Sump System. It produces 870Hp and 747 lb-ft (1,014 Nm) of torque thanks to a Precision 64/68 turbocharger and 1600 cc injectors.

The custom AWD system is assembled from the Audi parts bin using an Audi 02Q six-speed manual transmission from an Audi A3 2.0 L TDI with a Tilton 2-disc clutch and billet flywheel. Rest of the drivetrain is sourced from an Audi A3 with GKN custom driveshafts and a modified Haldex Center Diff, maintaining 50/50 power distribution at all times.

The Wiebe family has specialized over the years in Renault Racing cars in the German Berg-Cup series, and while they are focusing on the new Renault Clio SuperTurismo we have shown on our Channel before, let´s not forget the fantastic Renault Laguna BTCC Monsters they own and we immensely successful with.

One of those units is exactly this one shown here and that Bjorn Wiebe raced once again this year at Osnabruck. Still good enough to place among the Top 5 in the E1-2000 Class, this French Touring Car, for those who don´t know, is a Naturally Aspirated 2.0L FWD Car, capable of 310Hp/8750Rpm, moving little over 900Kg ( lighter in Hillclimb-spec given the regulations allow it) and equipped with one of the very first 7-speed Gearboxes evr fitted to a Race Car outside of Formula 1. And speaking of which, this machine was originally built between Renault Sport and William Engineering, so the F1 connection is quite a big one. And most of all, it is a pleasure to still see such a rare machine still being driven this hard in a Racing setting...

Ilirska-Bistrica in Slovenia was once again the stage of one of the most spectacular Hillclimbs of the year, featuring great weather and a tremendous entrylist.

Producing one of the best Top 10 Lists of the year, you´ll see here pretty much only 500+Hp Monsters, from a multitude of Lancer Evolution units in different states of tune, to GT3-spec units, to the usual Austrian Turbocharged Monsters and even the spectacular return to action of Milan Bubnic in his Lancia Delta, rebuilt in record time after his brutal crash in Grojanci. Only 3 months to rebuild such a damaged machine is almost unbelievable, let alone coming back and posting such an impressive result straight away.

Oh, and keep an eye on the two Fastest Monsters. Maybe you will be surprised who got beat at last on 2019 ....

After checking the surprise from many after seeing the 450Hp/10.000Rpm Lotus Elise that finally beat Karl Schagerl and his Golf TFSi-R this year, nothing better than showing from the inside how how fast Dan Michl´s monster is and how it was the quickest Touring Car at Ilirska Bistrica 2019.

This is not a new Monster in European HillClimb Racing by any means, being the product of over 10 years of development and racing by Michl Motorsport. Using the Elise/Speedster chassis at its core, it is from that point on, a highly modified beast, with the most notable feature being the unique engine used. A 2.8L Hartley V8 unit in Naturally Aspirated form, capable of 450Hp/10.000Rpm. For those unaware, this V8 is built using as base 2 Hayabusa Engine units and "fusing" them into a single engine. Of course it is way more complicated than that but in rough terms that is how this Dry-Sumped engine is built. And here it finds the perfect counterpart, in this mid-engined, 750Kg, carbon fibre bodied Monster that on 2019 is still as competitive as ever.

So we have a Top 10 full of surprises, new cars and even for the first time, a female driver ranking among the 10 Fastest machines (congratulations to Vanessa Zenklusen for the amazing performance). Of course between Lancer Evolution Monsters, Escort Cosworth and 911 GT3 units there were some usual appearances, but keep a close eye on each machine present here some very experienced drivers found their way to spectacular final results.

Second Guest Car we feature from Retro Rides Gathering 2019, and this time it´s the outrageous DriftWorks AE86 V8, a Drift Monster mixing 3 very special ingredients: a Spaceframed Chassis from a NASCAR, a 7.4L LSx V8 Engine in Naturally Aspirated form and the Iconic Toyota Hachiroku shell in its Trueno version.

Created and driven by the very Boss of DriftWorks, Phil Morrison, here we had the chance to observe this Monster finally attacking an HillClimb ( Shelsley Walsh in this case) in a spectaular Drift Run, where we had the added bonus of a proper "Tire Warming" session. This one is built for the public enjoyment more than to fight against the clock, but it is a tremendous machine and at 720Hp/1200Kg, it is certainly no slouch too... And getting sideways on such a narrow place with all that power certainly makes for some proper entertainment....

The last event of the Bergrallye portion of the Austrian HillClimb Championship was held in mixed weather conditions, and an entrylist featuring pretty much all the great Monsters from the country. Final Classification mirrored in some way thow the whole Season went, with many of the usual faces like Schagerl, Karl, Pailer, and Seidl being among the fastest, but also we got 2 cars that have never featured before on a Top 10 Video of ours, as Ewald Scherr in his Gabat-tuned Escort Cosworth and Harald Neuherz in his Audi Quattro S1 built for the Historic Class secured very impressive fianl placements. And to mark some history, we had Andreas Marko winning the E1-2000cc Class for the first time at the wheel of his 1.2L Turbo Audi A4 STW.

All in all, quite the eventful Race. Enjoy ;)

Continuing the presentation of the Guest Cars we had at Retro Rides Gathering 2019, we have today probaby the most unique of the bunch, a proper Hot Rod version of a 1930 Ford Model A, here powered by a Buick 6.6L V8 "Nailhead" Engine.

Built, owned and driven by Gavin Meanley, this is the very first pre-1945 car featured on our Channel, and with comes quite a number of technical solutions ( some would say problems... ) like the fact that it uses drum brakes and crossplys... But of course. with over 300Hp moving this incredibly stripped out machine, it is still impressively quick for such a Vintage machine...

350Hp Citroen Saxo 1150cc Turbo

HillClimb Monsters

Publicado el 1 oct. 2019

One of the most expected returns in European HillClimb Racing, here is Manuel Michalko and his completely rebuilt and revolutionary Citroen Saxo RP5 at St. Agatha Bergrennen, in its completely new 1150cc Turbocharged version.

Leaving the 1600cc Class and going straight into E1-2000, they chose a very different route, using a very low displacement engine in Turbocharged form, with around 350Hp at over 8.000Rpm, all this moving a 790Kg FWD machine. It is a quite experimental package, with a lot of bespoke solutions from its engine, gearbox, ALS and eletronics management. So much so that it is still a suffering from "youth" issues and it was possible to see them here, as Manuel and the Saxo were not able to complete the event, retiring on the first Sunday run.

But the most important thing was how quick the duo was able to be straight away. On the pratice runs they were able to post impressively quick times, among the Top 5 fastest within their Class. With more development and time behind the wheel and we coud very well be seeing one of the big dominators of the 2000 Class next year...

St. Agatha in Austria was once again the stage of one of the most interesting Hillclimb of the year in this event counting towards bothe the Austrian HillClimb Championship and the German Berg-Cup Series.

A tremendous entrylist featuring Monsters from a number of different countries, this year we were able to watch also the old Toruing Car record of Georg Plasa being finally beaten by none other than Karl Schagerl in his VW Golf Mk2 TFSi-R. But even that didn´t meant that the dominant Austrian was the fastest in this Top 10...

Some mechanical issues on the very last run left the door open for two other machines that finally returned to action properly and were seriously fast during all weekend. Find out for yourself...
