Cosworth Engines from the BDA and BDT units use on the old Escort Mk1 and Mk2, to the YB in both Turbocharged and Naturally Aspirated forms all the way to the mighty BDT-E unit used on the group B RS200 are among the most used and most tuned on Hillclimb Racing.

It is only fitting that we make a compilation with some of the best Monsters that use Cosworth powerplants that have featured on our Channel. Among the usual 600+Hp Escort and Sierra RS Cosworth, Classic Mk1 and Mk2 Esocrts there are also some very curious machines and unexpected machines featuring Cosworth Engine Swaps.

As we show more of the Guest Cars we had on the event we helped organize this year ( Retro Rides Gathering 2018) we now arrive at a quite special little thing. The super lightweight Mini Maguire 1360 of Derek Kessell.

Considered by many the Ultimate "pure" Mini, as although it is a spaceframed chassis, it uses largely just British Leyland parts, coupled with a bored BMC engine, with 1360cc and producing 140Hp. Coupling that with the extraordinarily low weight of 420Kg, makes for a very impressive, super agile Hillclimb machine.

That such a simple and old design is still so effective just proves how much of a winning concept the Original Mini was. And it certainly deserves to be celebrated.

Among the many bike powered little Monsters we have presented through time, we have never seen before one taking as base the C2 model of Citroen. Not the case for Croatian driver Luka Fabijancic who races this Suzuki GSX-R1000 powered spaceframed machine on the Formula Driver Championship of the respective country while participating on Hillclimb and Slalom events at the same time.

Here on this footage we can watch him on Buzet in two different occasions. On the Full Hilllcimb, counting towards the European Hillclimb Championship, and on the onboard clip, on the shorter version used for the Croatian Slalom Championship.

On both it can be seen that the 200Hp/11.000Rpm, 620Kg little Beast is more than capable of impressing with its speed and its cornering abilities, mixing the short wheelbase with mid-engined, rear wheel drive dynamics.

This very innocent looking Renault 5 GT Turbo may seem not all that modified and quite simple, but it´s one of the most Legendary Monsters in Spanish Rallying and Hillclimb Racing. It is the product of over a decade of preparation and Racing by Javier Martinez Carracedo, who devoted is Motorpsorts career to the French FWD Hatchback,

Knowing the machine inside out really is a great help as not only he went on to extract well over 200Hp from the 1.4L Turbocharged engine, but has also an almost telepathic relationship with the little Monster. And that translates to a spectacular driving style and incredible speed, beating much more modern and powerful competition in every race it enters. It is the product of pure talent and years of dedication and that´s something that needs to be celebrated by every Racing enthusiast.

Among the various Nissan GT-R units present at this year´s edition of Knysna Simola Hillclimb probably the coolest looking of the all was Quinsley Sale´s full black Monster, very appropriately dubbed "Vader VI".

It is the product of of over 5 years of work and development of Garage KYU and in its latest form is producing 800Hp from its VR35DETT Engine, while puttimg all this power on the ground with the help of the extensive Aerodynamic Kit that produces a very impressive 800Kg of Downforce.

Placing among the fastest 10 "Modified Saloon" Class machines certainly proves how capable this package is, with the fact that it is still a Street Legal machine makes it all the more impressive.

Built and developed by the Spanish Team Outed Racing and driven by Cristobal Serantes, this is probably the most extreme Citroen Saxo we have ever seen on Hillclimb Racing. Pretty much only the roof and windshield are left from the original car with it now being a mixture of Carbon Fibre and Aluminium from its spaceframed Chassis to all the rest of its bodywork while being powered by a Suzuki Hayabusa Engine in Turbocharged form.

All this is good for some tremendous numbers, with power on the region of 350Hp (on low boost, with the possibility of surpassing 500hp with higher levels), while weighing only 600Kg. With the engine positioned in rear-central position and power delivered to the Rear Wheels, it is the "perfect storm" to create a machine that simply had no rivals on the Hillclimbs where it competed this year.

Among the many Unique Monsters present at Retro Rides Gathering 2018 was Martin Stolton´s ´93 Ford Sierra Sapphire that sounded unlike any other Sierra we have ever heard before. That´s because it was powered by a 1UZ-FE V8 Engine in Naturally Aspirated form.

Producing a very sonorous 261Hp/6.500Rpm and moving only 1000Kg thanks to its stripped out interior among many other bodywork enhancements, including the bespoke Aero bits, it is a Monster very much in the beginning of it´s highly modified life, featuring a 6 Point Roll Cage, Twin side exit exhausts and curiously a BMW 318 Gearbox to transmit the power to the wheels. Much more is expected to come and we´ll certainly want to keep an eye on its evolution...

Marco Sbrollini is a multiple E1 Class Italian Champion and on the last edition of the Hillclimb Masters at Gubbio was also the fastest driver at the wheel of a Monster Lancia Delta.

With his 2.0L Turbocharged Monster producing over 650+Hp nowadays and weighing little over 1000Kg thanks to spaceframing of a large portion of the original Chassis, it also features a unique Aerodynamic package that sets it apart from other Lancia Deltas in the sport.

Werner Hofer and his brutal Ford Escort Cosworth tuned by Gabat continued its evolution in 2018 and have made their better peformances ever, posting very impressive results while fighting for the Austrian Hillclimb Championship Title and displaying speed to keep up with some of the bigger names in their Class.

The 650Hp Cowrth YB Turbo Monster presents many of the ultimate updates by Gabat alongside a unique Aero package that seems much more effective nowadays. On 2019 we surely expect even more performance and efficiency from this Baby Blue Beast.

Jonathan Portas has built and developed thiese last couple years this beautiful cross between a Opel Kadett C City body and a GSX-R1000 powered Sport Prototype, making for quite the frantic machine.

With 180Hp/12.000Rpm moving only 650Kg thanks to its Spaceframed chassis, it retains pretty much all the original bodywork with the only major changes being the widened panels applied in order to accomodate the wider stance, made of Carbon Fibre.

Young French HillClimb Racer Pierre Courroye (24 Years of Age) continued to be one of the most Dominant Drivers on 2018 onboard his mighty McLaren MP4 12C GT3, arguably the Fastest GT3-spec Monster in European HillClimb Racing.

Amassing a great number of Class Wins on both the French National Championship and European Hillclimb Championship, it ended up seeing controversies regarding the legality of some of its parts taking away the opportunity to win the Championships where it was present.

Regardless of that, it was undeniable the incredible pace of this duo and that was possible to see on Montée des Légendes 2018 at Col de la Faucillé where it impressed the public in this new event made to celebrate some of best that Hillclimb Racing offers.

Javicho Graña´s spectacular looking spaceframed Monster has returned to action on the Spanish Hills in 2018 and it was possible to catch on a few occasions with his Kawasaki ZX12-R powered, Alpine A110 inspired Prototype by Outeda Racing.

With the japanese motorbike engine producing 200Hp/11.000Rpm and moving little over 600Kg, this mid-engined, Rear Wheel Drive Monster is a very impressibe little thing and a tremendously agile one too. We just hope to see it competing more consistently in the future so images like this can be a more common occurence.

Gunter Goser drives one of the fastest Opel Kadett C units in the German Berg-Cup series. Powered by a Naturally Aspirated, Dry Sumped 2.4L engine producing around 300Hp/9.000Rpm, the Rear Wheel Drive Classic benefits from weighing under 900Kg, alongside some proper goodies like fully adjustable KW Suspensions, Hollinger 6-speed Sequential Gearbox, Double Disc Clutch and many others, to become a tremendously quick and effective Classic Race Car.

Here it can be seen in action on 3 different Hillclimbs held during the 2018 Season: Eschdorf, Oberhallau and Osnabruck. On all of the it fought for victory in tis Class while sounding and looking goddamn amazing.

Manfred Schulte has built, raced and developed through the years a very special Citroen AX powered by a Citroen C2 S1600 engine, capable here of around 250Hp/9.800Rpm.
Thanks to its low weight of around 780Kg and use of a sequential gearbox and among a whole host of aerodynamic changes, this "pocket rocket" has been consistently one of the fastest cars in the 1600cc Class of the highly competitive Berg-Cup series.

This is Christopher Neumayr´s Ford Escort Mk2 NPM-IRS 16v ( catchy name isn´t it? ) and not only it has quite the ballsy driver behind its wheel, but it is also a pretty extreme weapon. To comply with E1-2000 regulations it is using a Naturally Aspirated version of the Cosworth YB engine but tuned up to 308Hp/10.000Rpm. Although binary isn´t all that high with its max being 254Nm, truth is that it also doesn´t have to carry a whole lot.
With only 790Kg of weight this is one serious machine that needs all the help to keep its wheels grounded (although some sliding is bound to happen as you saw on the video.. ) so a lot of effort has gone into the aerodynamic development of this Monster. Final result could be described as something akin to the bastard child of a Classic Escort and a modern DTM racer. And for all the downforce available, suspension should be able to sustain the increased pressures. And on that, it was Mr. Neumayr himself coming up with some bespoke solutions.
Stopped now since the end of the 2017 Season, this Monster is set to comeback now on 2019 in an even more evolved Spec which may entail some big surprises. Whichever they may be, the speed and spectacular driving style of Mr. Neumayr will surely make it worthwhile for a new feature on our Tribe. For now let´s enjoy how great it already was.
