HillClimb Monsters

Publicado el 1 may. 2019
The target of tremendous interest from all the HillClimb Racing community in the beginning of this Season, this is the new Monster driven by Marek Rybnicek, a McLaren F1 GT powered by a 600Hp/9.500Rpm 1.7L 4G63 Turbocharged Engine. And was possible to see it in action last weekend at Rechberg in Austria, conquering a victory among the E2-Sh Class while being the third Fastest Touring Car present at the event. In what was pretty much its competitive debut...

So right now everyone should totally confused about this strange creation. So let´s clarify a few things. The only thing McLaren F1 about it is the outer shell. It is such a different machine from the original in fact, that even the official nomenclature for it is McF1 Evo, due to trademark issues. Said shell is built by DDR Motorsport from Florida ( the company calls this kind of shell Grullon GT) while the creation/construction of the whole car was performed by KOMVET Racing, who both maintains and owns this very unit. The chassis beneath comes from a Norma M20FC prototype, bringing with it the 1.7L 4G63 Mitsubishi Engine producing around 600Hp/9.500Rpm.

It uses a Sadev SLR82, 6 Speed Sequential racing transaxle Gearbox with paddle shift to transmit the power to the Rear Wheels. As is the case with the actual McLaren F1 curiously, it features central driving position and all this combined with the total weight of 710Kg we end up with a tremendous Monster that will certainly threaten various records as it continues its evolution...

This race´s Top 10 is quite different from the more recent ones we have posted as we move from the Austrian Championship now to France. Part of the French HillClimb Championship while also having some drivers invited from other countries, Abreschviller HillClimb on its 2019 was marked by the constant conditions that certainly made an impact on the final placings.

Still, it was possible to see some True Monsters like Pierre Courroye´s McLaren 12 GT3, Porsches in both NA and Twin Turbo form, the renewed BMW 320i STW of Canio Marchione, arguably the fastest Lancer Evo in Europe among many more.

Discover on the video how everyone stacked up and let us know which was your favourite machine and which surprised you the most, both positively and negatively..

Stefan Wiedenhofer continues evolving his Gabat tuned, stroked 2.2L 4G63 powered, AWD Mitsubishi Mirage R5 (originally built by Dytko Sport from Poland). With an Aerodynamic package more aggressive than ever it is regularly a contender for Overall Victories on any Austrian Hillclimb Championship Round and the beginning of the 2019 Season is no different.

With around 750Hp, weighing only 1050Kg and scoring multiple podiums and always fighting for Top Places on All events it entered, it was also one of the machines that our followers showed more interest in every single Top 10 Video we posted. For that, it is easy to explain why we have now this Single feature of this Monster that is certainly quite the unique machine.

Holger Hovemann has created and developed one of the most brutal Monsters in European Hillclimb Racing. Taking bodywork based on one of the most popular cars in the Berg-Cup series, the Kadett C, the engine used then on this machine is the V8 from a Lotus Elise GT1 unit (dubbed LT5), here producing 805Hp/9.500Rpm. Much of its underpinnings come from the Corvette ZR-1 and it is pretty much one of the most ambitious projects of the last decade in European HillClimb Racing.

Also because of that, it is also one that has suffered from many setbacks during the last years, passing most of the 2018 Season being recovered after some major Engine issues. The final clip you can watch on this video is exactly the first time this machine was fired up after the major rebuild it went through until earlier this year.

Wouter Bouman returned to action on 2019 to the Knox Mountain HillClimb 2019 in Canada, event he won on 2017 with this very Mazda RX-7, at the time with a quite different set-up. For those following our Channel for a longer time, you might remember this Monster as the 916Hp, Single Turbo RX-7 with quite a lot of Boost Lag while tackling this very event. This time, while still using the 20B, Triple Rotor, Single Turbo set-up, the Turbocharger wasn´t as big and tuned to produce consistent power all the way through its rev-range. Also it featured some new Aerodynamic solutions most notably new canards and splinteer on the front.
All this added up in a positive way and Mr. Bouman was able to beat his 2017 chrono by around half a second posting and impressive 1:47.214 best run, even though having pretty much 150Hp less at his disposal. Placed second overall in the event too, with only an Arcobentir Formula being able to beat him, although comparing the two isn´t properly fair given the architecture differences between a Road-Going car modified to be a Race Car and a spaceframed, purpose built single seater.

This is a remake of one of our Channel´s first videos and features one of the most unique Monsters we have seen on recent years on Hillclimb events. This beautiful Ford Capri, raced by Portuguese veteran António Nogueira on 2014 at Rampa da Falperra, a machine built to emulate the 70´sEndurance Racing car that was driven by the illustrious and unfortunately recently gone Niki Lauda, former F1 champion.

This particular unit was bought by portuguese veteran António Nogueira, and raced on the 2014 edition of Rampa da Falperra, showing to the public how awesome are more than 450Hp/9.000Rpm from a Cosworth 3.4 block and a total package that is as mechanical as it gets.

It is a complete throwback to another Era of motor racing and one that probably only Hillclimbing can give again the opportunity to delight the crowds with such valuable machines driven in anger. But check for yourself...

This is one of the Rotary Monsters owned by Aidan Barret from New Zealand and quite a special machine it is. You can see it in action on Leadfoot Festival 2017 using all its 330Hp produced by a peripherally ported 13B Rotary Engine, in Naturally Aspirated form, tuned by Green Brothers and it moves only 940Kg of Group C heavily inspired Bodywork, from its widened stance to all the Aerodynamic appendages used.

Even with the "big moment" that can be seen near the end of the video, it went on to post a very fast chrono in the 55 second range, showing how capable this Chassis still is. Since then, Mr. Barret has bought an even more special Rotary Beast, hich we have featured some months ago, the GT300 RE-Amemiya RX-7 FD3S.

For those following our Channel for a longer time, you will notice this ia remake of an older video we posted over a year ago, now with added clips and featuring much better image quality.

Garrett Mealing is the owner, builder and driver of this incredible looking Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse. Sporting a bespoke Bodykit designed for Time Attack Racing by Aero Guru Andrew Brilliant, this AWD, 4G63 Turbo powered now 600+Hp Monster had the competitive debut in 2018 and has since been evolved to compete for a Class Win on Knox Mountain HillClimb on Kelowna, Canada.

Although some mechanical problems persisted throughout the event, and Mr. Mealing is still exploring the potential of this unique Monster, the duo ended up clocking a 1:55.505, good enough to win GT-M Class (the main goal). With still quite a long way to evolve further, expect to see this Monster shed weight in the future ( 1275Kg in current spec) and more testing ensuring this Andrew Brilliant-designed Time Attack/HillClimb weapon to become much faster.

This is a special one, the two Alfa Romeo 4C Monsters created in Italy battling against each other at Verzegnis HillClimb, now faster than ever, after both went quite a lot of development. The same car used as base, but completely different machines from that point on, it´s the Alfa 4C by Picchio, powered by a 2.0L AER Inline 4 Turbo engine( used normally on Endurance Racing Prototypes) against the Alfa 4C "Furore" powered by a 3.0L Naturally Aspirated Zytek V8 unit ( normally used of Formula 3000´s)

One driven by Aleassandro Gabrielli and the other by Marco Gramenzi, very experienced HillClimb drivers on their own, both machines went through extensive development during these last two years until becoming the tremendously fast machines seen here. Picchio´s car is now boasting over 550Hp to move less than 900Kg, while Gramenzi´s unit "sings" beautifully at 460Hp/9.000Rpm, all the way up to over 10.000Rpm while weighing just 700Kg.

These are two of the most spectacular and better looking Monsters of the Sport, and we expect this battle to continue thoughout the Season. For now, let´s discover who wins this round...

HillClimb Monsters

Publicado el 17 jun. 2019

Although we have presented some crazy looking Monsters over time, this could very well be the craziest machine yet. It´s Franco Scribante´s Nissan GT-R R35, prepared in record time to beat Knysna Speed Festival Record, while "wearing" one of the craziest looking Aerodynamic packages we have seen and at 1600Hp, producing a titanic amount of power.

Pretty much converted into Hillclimb-spec in 3 weeks, this GT-R R35 was originally built by Dodson Motorsport in New Zealand and features the usual VR38 engine unit in quite extreme specification. Fully built 3.8L sleeved bottom end, with a custom Beryllium Ring headgasket sealing arrangement and its engine internals comprising of a Billet Winberg Crankshaft, Billet Conrods, Forged Pistons, Oversized Valves, higher lift and duration Camshafts, dry sump system, Alpha Carbon Fibre Intake Manifold, x12 Injector Dynamics Fuel Injectors. Add to that the highest spec GR6 transmission from Dodson Motorsport and you end up with a machine capable of being pushed over 2000Hp but for reliability sake, was used at a "quite modest" 1600Hp.

With vast portions of the original chassis being spaceframed now, it was also possible to achieve a ±1300kg total weight with no driver and fuel. Oh, and the Aero. Well, that´s the work of Dynamic Aero Solutions and with such short time to prepare the car while at th same time wanting as much downforce as possible to hold down this Monster, turns out the solution passed by fitting ALL the wings, including the now infamous front wing, which may have been taken and adapted from a Porsche 911 GT3 unit....

Well, in any case, final results are what matters and on that front, this machine was as successful as they come. On this video you can watch first what is the fastest ever run of a Modified Saloon in Simola HillClimb at 38.5 seconds and after that the Top 10 Shootout Winning run, with a 39.340 second run, achieved with night falling and no lights whatsoever fitted.

And remember, this was just the debut....

HillClimb Monsters

Publicado el 23 jun. 2019

Pieter Zeelie´s Toyota MR2 Monster powered by Turbocharged 2GR V6 engine evolved tremendously during the last year and faced the Simola HillClimb in full force. Now producing around 830Hp, it also benefitted from a pretty considerable weight loss, losing around 80Kg in overall weight, tipping the scales nowadays at a very respectable 1020Kg. But probably the biggest change was the implementation of a full race spec double wishbone setup with custom CNC alluminum uprights and stronger hubs and wheel bearings, making the car´s behaviour much more predictable and eliminating a lot of the traction issues it suffered in the past.

Of course Aerodynamically it continued its evolution sporting an even more dramatic version of the APR Bodykit inspired on the legendary Super GT Toyota MR-S that used to race in Japan in the early 2000´s. All this made for car capable of finally breaking into the Top 10 Fastest Modified Saloon Class machines in Knysna Speed Festival, all while posting a very very quick 40,9 second best chrono during the event.

On the video you can watch two different versions onboard of said run, with the second including Data Display. Unfortunately, light exposure was too high on the second clip, hence why we used both on the video.
